
Dental Assistant/receptionist
A dental assistant’s job involves basic administrative and sanitation tasks, usually at the behest of the dentist.
The main job duties performed by dental assistants are:
- Fixing appointments and booking slots over the phone or via computer.
- Figuring out dental insurance options with patients as they wait their turn with the dentist.
- Providing necessary information to patients throughout their time at the clinic/hospital.
- Seating patients and writing down oral health issues, like cavities and periodontitis, for dentist’s review. Assisting dental practitioners with oral procedures, such as tooth implants and root canals.
- Taking and developing X-rays.
- Sanitizing and sterilizing dental equipment before and after use.
- Suggesting good oral practices to promote hygiene like flossing and toothbrushing techniques.
- Informing the patient about at-home postoperative or post-treatment care.
A dental receptionist's duties will vary based on their place of employment, but most dental receptionists perform the following tasks on a day-to-day basis:
- Greet patients when they arrive at the dentist's office
- Schedule appointments for patients
- Maintain patient accounts and records
- Prepare and send patient bills
- Submit patient claims to insurance companies
- Assist patients in filling out required intake and medical forms
- Manage and organize specialist referrals
- Inform patients of payment options if applicable
- Keep track of office supplies and place orders for more supplies when necessary
- Perform basic accounting tasks such as taking patient payments and preparing billing statements
- Update patient insurance information
- Ensure all dental office equipment is functioning properly
- Sort and organize incoming and outgoing mail
- Maintain petty cash available in the dental office
- Ensure reception area is maintained and professional in appearance
